It was first mentioned in angling literature as "fish with speckled skins" by Roman author A Elian (circa 200 AD) in On the Nature of Animals. ﷯Rainbow Trout 'Oncorhynchus mykiss' Rainbow trout and are highly regarded game fish. Rainbow trout are a popular target for fly fishers, and several angling methods are used. The use of lures presented via spinning, casting or trolling techniques is common. Rainbow trout can also be caught on various live and dead natural baits. Current UK record stands at 33lb 4oz. ﷯Grayling 'Thymallus thymallus' The Grayling, known as the 'lady of the stream', used to be persecuted by anglers for the false perception that they stopped trout colonising stretches of rivers and streams. However, research has shown that Grayling and Trout feed on different prey items and generally prefer different microhabitats within rivers and streams. They can be fished for throughout the coarse fishing season (16 June to 14 March), providing thrilling sport on the fly when the trout season is closed. Grayling flies include: the grayling witch, klinkhamers, czech nymphs and 'red tags', along with other trout patterns. Current UK record stands at 4lb 3oz. (Jan 2014)

﷯Carp 'Cyprinus carpio' In 1653 Izaak Walton wrote in The Compleat Angler, "The Carp is the queen of rivers; a stately, a good, and a very subtle fish; that was not at first bred, nor hath been long in England, but is now naturalised." Carp are variable in terms of angling value eagerly sought by anglers, being considered highly prized coarse fish that are difficult to hook. The UK has a thriving carp angling market. It is the fastest growing angling market in the UK. Current UK Common Carp record stands at 56lb 6oz. (Jan 2014)

﷯Chub 'Squalius cephalus' European chub are popular with anglers due to their readiness to feed, and thus to be caught, in almost any conditions. Small chub are freely biting fish which even inexperienced anglers find easy to catch. As they become larger, however, chub become more wary and are easily spooked by noise or visual disturbance. Consequently, large chub (in excess of 2 kg) are keenly sought by anglers who prefer to target specific fish. Current UK record stands at 9lb 5oz. (Jan 2014).

﷯Dace 'Leuciscus leuciscus' The dace is a lively, active fish, of gregarious habits, and exceedingly prolific, depositing its pale yellow eggs in the spring at the roots of aquatic plants or in the gravelly beds of the shallow, flowing streams it frequents. In appearance it closely resembles the Roach in both size and shape, with the head and back of a dusky blue colour and the sides of a shining silvery aspect, with numerous dark lines running along the course of the scales. The ventral and anal fins are white, tinged with pale red,; and the dorsal, pectoral and caudal tipped with black. Dace feeds on worms, insects, insect-larvae, snails, and also vegetable matter, albeit rarely. Current UK record stands at 1lb 5oz. (Jan 2014)

﷯Tench 'Tinca tinca' Often reffered to as the Doctor Fish due to the healing properties of the mucus which covers the body of the Tench, which it is believed that wounded fish will rub up against to heal their wounds. Small Tench often find themselves falling prey to Trout. Whilst large Tench may be found in gravel pits or deep, slow-moving waters with a clayey or silty bottom the River Test has a good head of Tench which thrive on the rich vegetation. The best methods and bait to catch tench are float fishing and legering with a swim feeder using maggots, sweetcorn, pellets, bread, and worms. Fish over 1 kg (2 lb) in weight are very strong fighters when caught on a rod. Current UK record stands at 15lb 3oz. (Jan 2014)

﷯Perch 'Perca fluviatilis' Perch are sought-after by fishermen both for sport and for food. They can be caught with a variety of methods, but the two best methods are perhaps float fishing and lure fishing. The best way is to use a small hook and cast into the weeds just before the drop off. You will want to have a disgorger; perch are notorious for swallowing the hook, and will need aid of a disgorger or forceps for unhooking. They will take a variety of baits, including minnows, worms, maggots, goldfish, pieces of raw bacon, and softshell crayfish, but seem to prefer small fish, lobworms, red maggots, and lures. You can also fly fish for perch and many good perch have been caught this way by using patterns that imitate small fry or invertebrates. The Perch record weight in The UK is 5 lb, 15 oz.

﷯Pike 'Esox lucius' Effective methods for catching this hard-fighting fish include dead baits, lure fishing, and jerk baiting. They are prized as game fish for their determined fighting. Fly fishing for pike is another eligible way of catching these fish, and the float tube is now recognized as an especially suitable water craft for pike fly-fishing. Also they have been caught this way by using patterns that imitate small fry or invertebrates. In recent decades, more pike are released back to the water after catching (catch and release), but they can easily be damaged when handled. Handling those fish with dry hands can easily damage their mucus-covered skin and possibly lead to their deaths from infections.

﷯Roach 'Rutilus rutilus' Larger specimens tend to be elusive, but smaller ones are easy to catch on relatively light line and with a bait such as maggots or worms. They also take particle baits such as sweetcorn,the only limit is the size of the bait, because the mouth of the roach is relatively small and the pharyngeal teeth are not particularly strong. Good catches require regular feeding to keep the shoal active and feeding around the bait. The best catches with fixed float fishing are often made when the bait is presented just a few centimeters above the bottom. The maximum recorded weight for the species in Britain is 4 lb (1.8 kg). Any fish over a pound is regarded as a specimen individual.
